Wizards
Wizards are educated individuals who have, through long and arduous study, gained the ability to manipulate reality to their whim. All magic practitioners are born with at least an iota of talent that most often manifests between the ages of 6 and 8. One's heritage plays a large role in determining ones chances of having the gift. Those that have an ability that must be refined through diligent study and practice, through doing the work are called wizards.
From the earliest days of the Empire, wizards played a pivotal role in its development. On one hand, they have saved countless people from starvation, beasts and monsters, even divine retribution. They were often advisers to the Sovereign, guiding them to build buildings of utility such as roads, aqueducts, post towers, barrier walls, mist wards etc.
On the other - they have caused some of the greatest strife in the Empire's dawn years which has had immense ramifications - from the formation of the Inquisition to deal with rogue mages, the creation of laws that mandate compulsory education and employment of wizards, to the great divide in opinion amongst people when it comes to mages and magic.
Some respect them for the work and benefits that they provide to the land as much as any other profession, while others are fearful of the atrocities they still can unleash should they be unchecked. Behind the books, robes, wands and staves lies a mortal who must deal with what they are and what they could become…
